What is an occupation code? Why is it important?

An occupation code is determined on the basis of the employee's duties, and is a 7-digit code which can be found in Statistics Norway’s directory of occupations (SSB). Only these codes from Statistics Norway can be used.

It is a code that is necessary to have in the filing of a-melding. Without such a code, or if a code that is not in Statistics Norway is used, the a-melding will be rejected.

The the a-melding is a part of the a-ordning, which is a coordinated way for employers to report information on income and employees to NAV, Statistics Norway and the Norwegian Tax Agency.
